In a battle all you need to make you fight is a little hot blood and the knowledge that it’s more dangerous to lose than to win.

“I think we might be heading into an ambush.”

“I see… but how? Does your character have points in the Ambush Detection skill? Does your class get a spell to detect hidden creatures? Is it that the deity of your chosen religion bestowed upon you a boon to reveal with holy sight those who mean you harm? Do you possess an ancient artefact from the tomb of a forgotten king, which glows with a spectral light when enemies are near?”

“Nah, I can just see the NPC’s name tag sticking out from the edge of that bush over there.”

Sometimes I think that the only real battle fought in an MMO is between the developer and the metagame.

This is one reason why the first thing I do after character creation is switch off all on-screen name display, both player and NPC. Swiftly followed by switching off all floating numbers and other visual pollution.

Reminds me of myself in APB…quite a few people have accused me of being a hacker because I can see their nametags floating above their heads when they pass near a closed door. It’s always fun to “wall-bang” players through a door and watching them subsequently rage about how I must have been hacking and using ESP hacks.

Some people are just too easy to provoke.

Reminds me of a game of World of Tanks a month or two ago, where I was artillery on one of the desert maps. Went to the overhead view and was checking to see how far I could shoot when I looked at a lone bush atop a ramp and decided “that’d be a good hiding spot” so I lobbed a shell in just for kicks. Killed an M2 MT with one shot. This was in the first 30 seconds or so of the map when people were still just working their way out of the starting base, so the poor guy died without anyone even haven spotted anyone yet. I felt kinda sorry for him. Didn’t stop me from lobbing a shell at another promising looking bush just in case though. :>
