If, however, you want to make something that has some very different fundamental assumptions, say, a fruitcake or even a meat loaf, starting with cheesecake is similarly a recipe for frustration. I'd not say that EVE is a cheesecake, but rather, a different animal entirely. Runes of magic or Allods Online, now those are cheesecake with different toppings. There's nothing wrong with that, but then, not everyone likes cheesecake. If you want to make a modern MMO in the cheesecake mold, yes, make a blasted cheesecake already. That being said, maybe the problem with MMOs is that cheesecake isn't for everyone, but the base-topping-supplement formula is strong enough on its own to deserve being worked on further than just the regular recipes everyone already does. Now we just need to find a way to bake a cake that doesn't cost tens of millions of dollars... Cheese on ham? You, my friend, just surpassed the ingenuity of sliced bread itself!
