The problem is WoW does lots of different things and does them all pretty well. It doesn't hurt WoW as a pve game to have pvp because it's well done and is a place for raiders to blow off steam after raids. Problem for other games is that they all feel they need to check all the boxes because WoW does. So Warhammer tacked on a crappy crafting system at the last minute when it would have been a better game without it. COH tacks on a crappy pvp system. Eve is planning to tack on a crappy character system so you can play Eve without your playing piece being your ship. I think in general the feature-itis of most MMOs is a really bad thing.
