@Tobold: I'm glad it's not just me. And now that you've stated that you're not playing it, you're bound to attract all the fanboi hate mail being by far the more eminent blog personage. So thanks! Although in fairness we're still waiting for the site to implode under the traffic load of your link to us, so it's swings and roundabouts I guess.

@Melf: It is indeed full of awesome, but I'm tired of raking through the muck to find it, especially when I'm paying for it. I think you're right, it might well improve with time, and I can imagine the VanHemlocks of the world are feeling quietly smug about their Three Month Rule right now. I think it'll need more than three months though, and after that amount of time, how quiet will T1 and T2 be? I guess it depends on where Mythic go next.

@Aaron: Fallout 3, Farcry 2, Fable 2, Deadspace, World of Goo, GTA IV PC, The Witcher: Reloaded. I might even crawl back in to WoW for the Lich King, or perhaps LotRO for the Mines of Moria. In addition there are other MMOs that are again claiming that they're trying to do something a bit different, such as Chronicles of Spellborn. So, yes, there is fierce competition out there on the gaming battlefield, and I guess WAR is just the first casualty of that, for me.

I'm sure I'll still be wittering about MMOs, among other things, for a while yet.

Thanks to all again for the comments.

Dwarf abuse aside, I may not subscribe either due to the release of Fallout 3 and Football Manager Live. I just can't see myself finding a lot of time for WAR between now and Christmas.
It's a good game but not good enough to play at the expense of other newer and shinier toys.

I agree with pretty much everything you wrote, so I can see why you'd want to leave. I was also if-fy about continuing my subscription. The clincher in the end was that I just don't have anything else I want to play for the moment.

I feel like a lot of the issues could (should, perhaps will) be resolved over the coming months, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The game is full of awesome, it's just lurking slightly beneath a surface of muck and scum and bugs.

<a href="http://tobolds.blogspot.com/2008/10/personal-decision.html" rel="nofollow">Linkback</a>

Very much agree. The whole "which game is better" discussion is kind of silly, different players just have different personal preferences, which are more or less well matched by different games. You just play the game which is more fun to you, and there is no good reason to do otherwise.

@Heckle: Well, as I mentioned in the post - you know, if you'd read it - Zoso is still playing. And he's the sensible insightful one. But you'll be ever so pleased to know that I printed your comment out and it was soft, strong and really quite absorbent.

@Aaron: Oh, there are plenty of other MMOs with dwarves. Maybe Wrath of the Lich King, maybe Lord of the Rings, or perhaps that new MMO from Sony 'Dwarves are the best, oh yes they are, ner ner ner: Online'.

@Khan: I see what you did there. Bugs! Which are like bugs! Thanks for the thoughts, I'll definitely be bumbling around in some MMO or another and wittering about it. Maybe I should look at LotRO again, so many people seem to have good things to say about it these days. In the immediate future there's Old Faithful of Azeroth, and then onwards to something else more interesting instead.

@Arbitrary: Never say never! I totally agree. I certainly won't rule out a return at some point, perhaps if they ever add the dwarf hammerer back... I might have trouble resisting the pull in that case.

@unwise: You are Zoso; hopefully he'll continue the WAR coverage here in a similar vein to how you've expressed it. The game is good enough for you guys, and I'm very happy and, as I said, somewhat envious, because Warhammer is a fantastic setting and I really wanted to get involved in the world. For me the game just doesn't have enough of a hook, but I'm glad to see that this is not the case for many others, because it means that Mythic is probably going to do well out of the game in the long term, and this can only be a good thing for the industry as a whole.

Thanks for all of your comments and insights. Especially the one that allowed me to love my bum.

Great article and I agree that many of the issues you've pointed out are indeed the largest flaws in the game as it stands.

At the moment, I'm enjoying the scenario grind interspersed with a bit of questing, but the game will live or die in T4 RvR as far as I'm concerned. The population problems shouldn't be an issue since the majority of the activity will be restricted to at most 3 concurrent RvR lakes.

Levelling an alt will become fairly tedious, but I imagine there will always be scenarios popping on a regular basis throughout the lower tiers. Once T3 levelling has been improved, it should be a reasonably fun experience to bring at least a few alts to 40.

So yeah, I think I understand your decision not to subscribe. I'm still enjoying the game enough presently to postpone such decisions until after I've checked out the T4 endgame.

The nice thing about the buffet of MMOs we have nowadays is that you get to make this kind of choice. it's not inconceivable I won't at some point, but I'll always have it on my hard drive, able to boot it back up if wanted. I am carrying on with it, but I think we all need to applaud the decisions of others!

Go with what works for you. I like playing LotRO. I don't know why. Much of the criticisms I've heard about the game ring true (combat can be clunky at times, the elf and human models are bland, etc.). When I log into the game and start playing, it just works for me. I get to play a hobbit in Middle-earth and I'm happy with it.

If WAR isn't your cup of tea, don't play it. Personally, the jury is still out on the game. I've noticed the low populations in the world and definitely agree it's an issue. A couple of times I've run across another person only to have it dawn on me that they are the first person I've seen in the last half-hour. I've been in Scenarios but I just can't grind them like other people do. Mythic seems to be aware of the issue so we'll see how it goes.

I've noticed the difference between actions and animations too. A couple of times on my Squig Herder, I've been shooting arrows into something but my toon is waving his spear around. I found a solution to correct the disparity (hit a melee skill and get an out-of-range error - the next ranged skill will appear correctly with the bow animation) but it still bugs me that it happens. Bugs! Get it?! 'Bugs me?' Because it's a bu ... nevermind. :)

I'm willing to ride it out for another month or so. I am enjoying my time there for the most part and, from what I've seen, Mythic is pretty responsive to feedback.

Best of luck in your gaming adventures!
