I'm glad it's not just me that seems to remember a time in these games when it wasn't simply about watching the level numbers tick-over as fast as the price readout on a petrol pump.

I like your alternative hugefish_m Shakespeare direction, mixing it up a bit with some English language too. Nice. That's the power of hugefish_m, it translates so easily to any culture. If one was to open up a Star Trek universal translator, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that inside was nothing more than an inexpensive PC outputting the hugefish_m emote.

Just don't use it on the Wargoit aliens of Krontilon IV: apparently it translates into something to do with their mother's unsavoury relationship with certain farmyard animals. Learned that one the hard way. Hoo boy.

Wow! An excellent post! You pretty much nailed what it is I rail against so much in many games. It reminds me of the UBRS runs we used to do in WoW. They became soooo formulaic. "Go right here." "Why?" "Because we always go right here." "But what's to the left?" "Don't know. Just go right."

It just seems less fun when I can not only see the mechanics at work the the players are also playing with the mechanics in mind. When I stop being a mighty hero and become an XP slot machine, I lose interest in the game.

"To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing /emote hugefish_m?"

Just to further break your analogy, as you talk of gankings, perhaps another reason the shepherd broke out the heavy stick is that, with certain flocks, when he was leading from the front as soon as his back was turned a few of the really hardcore sheep started shoving the others off the mountain for a laugh (and then wrapped otters in carpets and took them to an ice cream factory).

Anyway, more to the point, Hamlet, if I say so myself, was a triumph. I'm making a note here, huge success.

A room in the castle.
